Collision Repairs

Collision repairs

Two repair quotes for the same dent can be priced on very different parts and paint. The same questions to each repairer make the difference plain.

BusinessIts name, and who you spoke to.
01Can I have the quote itemised, in writing?Parts, labour and paint on separate lines.
02Are the parts new from the carmaker, new from another maker, or used?Write the answer for each main part, since this is often where quotes differ.
03How will you match the paint?Ask whether panels next to the repair will be blended in too.
04If you find more damage once it is apart, will you call me before doing the work?Ask how extra work is priced and approved.
05How long will you have the car?Ask whether that depends on parts arriving.
06Is a loan car available while mine is in?And whether it costs anything.
07If a claim is paying, will you deal with the company directly?Ask how they deal with the company and its assessor.
08What warranty comes with the repair and the paint?Ask for it in writing with the invoice.
Ask each business the same questions and write the answers side by side. Printed, the sheet fills one page, with a column for each of three quotes. From collisionrepairs.com.au, a concept page.

Comparing repair quotes

The gap between two quotes usually comes from the parts, the hours of labour and how much of the car gets painted. A cheaper quote may use used parts or paint only the damaged panel.

Ask each repairer to look at the car in person. Damage behind a bumper or under a panel often only shows once someone looks closely.

If someone else is paying

Tell each repairer at the start if the repair is going through a claim, and give them the claim number. Ask the company handling the claim if the choice of repairer is yours.

Before you drop off the car, take photos of the damage and of the rest of the car, and empty the boot and cabin of anything you will need.

Where to check

  • ABN Lookup, Australian Business Register

Shows whether a business's ABN is active or cancelled, its business type and its GST status, and the Register says the public can use it to check a business before buying.
